In 2014 a game stream was set up on Twitch by which thousands (at peak over 100,000, with over 1,000,000 total) people collectively controlled a player in the online Pokemon game, successfully beating the game. They have gone live with TwitchPlaysPokemon once again for the second anniversary of its creation. Give it a try!
“Twitch Plays Pokemon is a stream that lets you play Pokemon collaboratively with a lot of other people by typing commands into chat.
“Currently the first ever run of an extensively customized romhack of Pokemon Crystal is being played.
“In this mode every button (and button combo) said in chat is input into the game in the order they come in.
“In democracy mode the next button combination to enter is determined by a popular poll taken from button sequences said in chat.
“These modes are switched between by voting by saying
democracy in chat. There is no point to voting on a input mode more frequently than once every 15 minutes.
“Democracy needs at least 90% of votes to activate, anarchy needs only 50%.”
